Motorhomes with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) above 3,500kg have different rules compared with lighter vehicles. In the UK, many drivers who passed their test after 1 January 1997 will need a Category C1 driving licence to drive one. Heavier motorhomes may also have different speed limits in some situations, can be subject to weight restrictions, and usually have higher payloads. Always check your licence entitlement and the vehicle’s plated weight before purchasing.

The Fiat Ducato is the most popular base vehicle for motorhomes, but manufacturers offer several versions with different engines, transmissions and equipment levels. Depending on the model year, you may find features such as automatic gearboxes, adaptive cruise control, upgraded infotainment systems, lane assist and more powerful engines. No. A motorhome can only be parked where parking is legally permitted. Parking overnight does not automatically give you permission to camp. Many local authorities have restrictions on overnight stays, while private land always requires the owner’s permission. Always check local signs and regulations before stopping.

An Electrical Hook-Up (EHU) allows your motorhome to connect safely to a campsite’s mains electricity supply. This provides power for appliances, battery charging and heating systems designed to run on 230V electricity.

Yes. Always fully unwind your hook-up cable before use, even if you only need part of its length. A coiled cable carrying a high electrical load can build up heat, increasing the risk of damage or, in extreme cases, fire. A typical EHU cable is around 25 metres long, giving enough flexibility on most campsites. For more practical advice, see EHU Basics.
Every campsite has a maximum electrical supply, usually between 6 and 16 amps. Running several high-powered appliances at once, such as a kettle, heater and microwave, may trip the campsite’s circuit breaker. Travelling with a dog, cat or ferret to Europe requires preparation. Your pet must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies and have the appropriate Animal Health Certificate (AHC) or other required documentation. Some countries also require tapeworm treatment before returning to the UK.

Before towing with a motorhome, check both your licence entitlement and your vehicle’s towing capacity. You must not exceed the Gross Train Weight shown on the vehicle’s plate. Your trailer must also be correctly loaded, securely coupled and fitted with legal lighting and braking systems where required.

Air suspension can improve ride comfort, handling and vehicle levelling, particularly on heavier motorhomes or those carrying varying loads. It can reduce body roll and improve stability, but it also adds cost and requires occasional maintenance. Whether it’s worthwhile depends on how you use your motorhome and your budget.

It’s generally recommended to use toilet paper designed for motorhome or caravan toilets. It breaks down much more quickly in the waste cassette, reducing the chance of blockages and making the cassette easier to empty. Some premium household toilet papers dissolve well, but many do not.

Motorhome tyres are designed to carry heavier loads than standard van tyres. They usually have reinforced sidewalls and higher load ratings to support the weight of a fully loaded motorhome. Always fit tyres that meet or exceed the manufacturer’s specified load and speed ratings, and regularly check pressures, especially before long journeys.
Each system has advantages. Exchange bottles are simple and widely available, refillable bottles are cheaper to fill over time and can often be topped up at LPG stations, while underslung tanks save storage space and provide the greatest convenience for frequent travellers. The best option depends on how often you travel and whether you tour Europe.
Some modern diesel engines use a wet timing belt that runs inside the engine and is lubricated by engine oil. If the wrong oil is used or servicing is neglected, the belt can deteriorate prematurely, potentially leading to expensive engine damage. Knowing whether your engine has a wet belt and following the manufacturer’s service schedule is essential.
Wash your motorhome regularly using products specifically designed for motorhome or caravan bodywork. Avoid aggressive household cleaners or very high-pressure washing close to seals, vents and decals, as these can cause damage. Cleaning the roof at least once or twice a year also helps prevent black streaks forming on the sides.
If your motorhome won’t be used during the winter, drain the fresh water system, empty the toilet cassette, disconnect or maintain the batteries, protect against damp and keep the vehicle ventilated. Regularly moving the vehicle slightly or checking tyre pressures can also help prevent flat spots.
